UN's failure in Western Sahara led to tragic events, says US NGO

New York, Oct 8, 2017 (SPS) -The US NGO Western Sahara Foundation said in New York that the failure of the United Nations to hold a referendum on self-determination in Western Sahara had "tragic" consequences on the Saharawi people who underwent torture, imprisonment and disappearances.

Delegation from Canary Islands on visit to Sahrawi refugee camps

Shaheed El-Hafed, Oct 7, 2017 (SPS) - A high-level delegation from the Canary Islands has started a visit to the Saharawi refugee camps to closely find out about the conditions experienced by the Sahrawi refugees.
The Canary delegation, whose visit lasts until October 10th, comprises 49 members representing various governmental and non-governmental organizations, including politicians, parliamentarians and representatives of civil society organizations and trade unions.
The delegation will meet with Saharawi officials and visit national institutions. (SPS)

Moroccan forces suppress peaceful demonstration in occupied El-Aaiun

El-Aaiun (Occupied Zones), Oct 6, 2017 (SPS) - The Moroccan forces on Thursday evening intervened violently against peaceful Sahrawi demonstrators who took to the streets of the occupied city of El-Aaiun, in response to a call by the committee of the families of the Gdeim Izik group prisoners, to express solidarity with the Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons and demand their release.

Pretoria (South Africa), October, 04 2017 (SPS) - South African President Jacob Zuma and Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on Tuesday reaffirmed their country's firm solidarity with the just struggle of the Sahrawi people.
The communiqué of the meeting between the President of South Africa and the President of Zimbabwe underlined the need for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to hold a conference in solidarity with the Sahrawi people.

New York, October 04, 2017 (SPS) - The nations of Guatemala and Costa Rica have expressed this Monday through our permanent ambassadors to the United Nations their support for the resolutions that have been adopted by the General Assembly and the Security Council on the Saharawi issue.
Guatemala reiterates its "support for the efforts of the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy" in their quest for a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the Saharawi-Moroccan conflict.

UN General Assembly: Community of Latin American and Caribbean States supports efforts to reach a political solution to the dispute in Western Sahara

New York,  October 3, 2017 (SPS)  -The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) affirmed on Monday that it will continue to "strongly support the efforts of the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to achieve a political, just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution that will lead to the free determination of the people of Western Sahara in the context of agreements compatible with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and General Assembly Resolution 1514 (XV) and other relevant resolutions.

Moroccan authorities refers young Saharawi to Carcel Negra in occupied El-Aaiun

El-Aaiun, Oct , 2017 (SPS) - The Moroccan authorities deferred Saturday young Sahrawi Amrabih Loubeihat to Carcel Negra (black prison) in the occupied El-Aaiun, after appearing before the court, indicated a Saharawi judicial source.
The young Saharawi should have responded before the court to the criminal charges brought against him by the prosecution, according to his family cited by the same source.

Security Council to receive briefing on Western Sahara in October

New York, Oct 1, 2017 (SPS) - The United Nations Security Council will receive a briefing on Western Sahara in October to discuss the situation in this non-self-governing territory, while the UN intends to relaunch mediation efforts from next month with a view to resuming talks between Polisario Front and Morocco.
The semi-annual briefing is expected to be conducted by the new Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara, Horst Kohler.
