El Aaiun (occupied territories),
10/11/2007 (SPS) More than 20 persons arrested and tortured in
rallies that took place on Friday in El Aaiun and Smara,
advocating the liberations of Saharawi political prisoner and
the respect of the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination
and independence, according to communiqués of many human rights
associations on the ground.
Dozens persons were arrested during a violent intervention by
the Moroccan police in the neighbourhood of Al Inaach in El
Aaiun, and six others laying unconscious in the street,
stressing that the mother and the sisters of the Saharawi
political prisoner, EL Ouali Ameidan, are among the wounded
detainees.
Among the arrestees, the communiqués also listed Gheina Bouhah,
who had handed over a striking dossier on the Moroccan human
rights violations in Western Sahara to the Commission of Human
Rights Watch, currently visiting the Saharawi territories and
the refugee camps.
In Smara, the Saharawi spiritual capital under Moroccan
occupation, the Saharawi citizens distributed tracts and wrote
slogans reflecting their rejection of the colonial occupation
during a peaceful demonstration that ended by the arrest of four
Saharawi youngsters. One of the two are in hospital after
serious wounds he had during brutal interrogations in a Moroccan
police station in the city, the same source added. (SPS)
