OCCUPIED TERRITORIES/REPRESSION/MEDIAS

The repression against the Saharawi people does not encourage the direct negotiations between POLISARIO and Morocco (Medias)

Paris, 09/11/2007 (SPS) The pursuit of the repression against the Saharawi people "does not contribute to create a favourable climate for the direct negotiations between Morocco and POLISARIO Front", indicated Mr. Jean Lemarec, member of the Committee for the Respect of the liberties and Human right in Western Sahara (CORELSO), in an article published in “Rouge midi’’.

"These last months, Morocco took profit of the fact that the attention was diverted to the negotiations between POLISARIO Front’s delegation and Morocco to intensify the repressive measures against the Saharawi people in the occupied territories", Mr. Jean-Paul Lemarec, wrote in his article entitled "the carrot and the truncheon".

"All the demonstrations, often organised by the youngsters to demand the Saharawi peoples’ right to self-determination and independence, are violently oppressed by the Moroccan forces of occupation", he stated, stressing that the "arrests, imprisonments, abductions, tortures, ransacked houses, are the daily life of the Saharawis".

He also noted that we were able to witness on resuming to "forced disappearance": Months ago, 15 Saharawi youngsters disappeared and their parents can not find information on them. This summer, the number of the Saharawi political prisoners doubled and the show trials increased against the Saharawi human rights activists".

The writer stated many cases of Moroccan human rights violations against the Saharawi people and emphasised the importance of putting an end to the Moroccan human rights violations so as to encourage negotiations between POLISARIO Front and Morocco.

He stressed that "from now to December, the actions must be undertaken vis-à-vis the international bodies, governments of the European Union (especially France) so as to compel Morocco respect its international engagements for the respect of the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination and so as to put an end to the repression in the occupied territories of Western Sahara".

"From this standing point, it is necessary to enlarge he UN Mission for the organisation of a referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO- in French) to include the protection of the human rights", he concluded. (SPS)
