SADR/FRANCE/SOLIDARITY

A French parliamentarian condemns France’s two weights two measures policy on Western Sahara

Paris, 09/11/2007 (SPS) The parliamentarian of Seine-Maritime, Mayor of Gonfreville l’Orcher, Jean-Paul Lecoq, condemned on Thursday before the French Parliament, the French policy of two weights two measures on the conflict of Western Sahara, where "the market largely prevails on human rights, and commerce prevail on self-determination"

"It is surprising that the Minister for Foreign Affairs does not elaborate a firm position against the Moroccan government and its Head of State (king Mohammed VI) so as the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination be respected since it is widely recognised", Mr. Lecoq deplored.

To the French parliamentarian, Morocco "has never stopped its plots of obstruction against the Saharawi people’ determination to achieve independence. The Moroccan authorities, and in particular Mohamed VI, king of Morocco, showed no will to adjust their attitude towards the international law: They stubbornly refuse the implementation of the UN’s resolutions that provides for the definitive settlement of the conflict of Western Sahara in flagrant and open violation of the principles of the UN Charter".

He also recalled that within the UN, more than 70 resolutions were adopted on the "necessity of the decolonisation of Western Sahara Occidental, but the Moroccan occupation continues to fail its international obligations".

Mr. Lecoq recalled that in his last visit to Morocco, President Sarkozy and his Foreign Affairs Minister "did not recall the Head of the Moroccan State his international responsibilities regarding the human rights and the Saharawi people’s rights. It is a two weights two measures policy".

"No commentary, no condemnation! Surprising attitude from a FA Minister who does not hesitate to urge for the use of war and adoption of sanctions against Iran", he protested.

"Nevertheless, the stability in the region and a serious Mediterranean policy widely depend on the solution of this conflict", he recalled. (SPS)
