SADR/AUSTRALIA

AWSA demands the end of importation of Western Sahara stolen phosphate

London, 07/11/2007 (SPS) The Australian Western Sahara Association (AWSA) warned against the pursuit of importation of phosphate from Western Sahara by an Australian fertilisers company.

After a shipment of phosphate the ship "Jin Yi" is planning to bring a new phosphate cargo in November the 10 and 11th from Western Sahara to the account of the Australian CSBP Fremantle company Wes Farmers, a press release by the Association indicated.

The importation of the Western Sahara phosphate is, according to AWSA, "an economical and political support to the barbarous occupation". "The natural resources of Western Sahara re the property of the Saharawi people not the Moroccan government", the Association stressed.

AWSA considers that the importation "of stolen resources" is a violation of the international law.

By continuing the plundering of the phosphate of the last colony in Africa and fixing as an objective to reach a production of three millions to a year, Morocco deprives the Saharawi people of their goods, the association adds.

It calls to the suspension of the importation by Australia companies of the Saharawi phosphate, which is "stolen" from the occupied zone of Western Sahara, until the settlement of the conflict or look for ways to legalise the economical operations with the territory.

The Australian association urged the company, on the other hand, to study the position of the Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs vis-à-vis the Moroccan colonial policy in Western Sahara, by denouncing the plundering of the Saharawi resources.

In this respect, it should be recalled, the Swedish FA Minister affirmed last September in a press release before the Swedish Parliament that Western Sahara is a territory occupied by Morocco, and that the Moroccan claims over Western Sahara have no legal basis, and thus the exploitation of the natural resources of the territory is illegal.
