17/10/2007 (SPS) The President of the Republic, Mohamed
Abdelaziz, started Wednesday a few days visit to Italy to meet
many officials and politicians and to attend the meetings of the
Italian parliamentarian group « Peace for the Saharawi people »
in Rome, and the Conference of the International Coordination of
support to the Saharawi people.
The President’s visit started with a meeting in Rome with the
Vice President of the Italian government and Minister for
Foreign Affairs, Massimo D’Alema, in the presence of the General
Director of the Department of The Mediterranean and north
Africa, in addition to other officials, a source from the
Presidential delegation indicated.
The discussion tackled the bilateral relations and the
perspectives of peace in Western Sahara.
IN this respect, Mr. D’Alema expressed his appreciation of
POLISARIO Front’s "responsible position" with regard to the
international community’s efforts to reach a peaceful solution
to the conflict in Western Sahara.
"A solution, he added, that must provide for the
self-determination to the Saharawi people and open perspectives
for the cooperation between the countries of the Maghreb, to
which Europe give a special importance".
Mr. D’Alema finally stressed that Italy will continue to
encourage and support the negotiations between the two parties
to the conflict, POLISARIO Front and Morocco, with a view to
implement the UN Security Council’s resolution 1754.
ON his side, the President of the Saharawi Republic informed the
Italian FA Minister on the latest developments of the conflict
and thanked Italy for the efforts it is paying for the
realisation of a peaceful, just and lasting solution to the
conflict and for the humanitarian aid to the Saharawi refugees.
It should be recalled that Italy is a non permanent member of
the UN Security Council and that the Italian Parliament voted
last July a resolution urging the Italian government to give
POLISARIO Front a diplomatic status in Italy.
The Head of the Saharawi State also met with Mr. Franco
Giordano, Secretary General of the Refundazione Communiste Party
in the presence of Mr. Fabio Amato, person in charge of
International Relations.
Mr. Giordano confirmed the complete support of his party to the
just struggle of the Saharawi people for self-determination and
independence.
The Italian politician condemned the Moroccan human rights
violations in the occupied zone of Western Sahara and renewed
the commitment of his party to continue helping the Saharawi
people as on the political level as well as on the material
level until they get all their national rights.
Refundazione Communiste is a member of the Italian coalition in
power an one of its official sis heading the Italian Parliament.
The Saharawi President is accompanied by a delegation composed
of Mr. Mhamed Khadad, Saharawi Coordination with the MINURSO,
Mr. Mih Omar, POLISARIO Front’s Representative in Italy and Mr.
Abdati Breika, Councillor to the President. (SPS)
