Algiers,
07/06/2007 (SPS) The future direct negotiations between POLISARIO
Front and Morocco, within the framework of the recent resolution of
the UN Security Council on Western Sahara is an unavoidable choice,
the US Ambassador to Algiers, M. Robert S. Ford, indicated in an
interview published on Wednesday by the Algerian newspaper, "Le
Quotidien d'Oran".
"There is no other choice" but to bring the two parties to the
conflict face to face, in the same room to negotiate, the American
diplomat indicated, referring to the resolution 1754 of the UN
Security Council, unanimously adopted last April the 30.
"That does not mean that Polisario must accept everything of what
Moroccans propose and Moroccans too", he said.
Resolution 1754 exhorts Morocco and Polisario Front to start
unconditioned negotiations under the auspices of the UN, with a view
to obtain a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution that
would lead to the self-determination of the people of Western
Sahara, it should be recalled.
"We strongly support this approach", the US Ambassador affirmed,
recalling that his country "has always supported the right of the
Saharawi people to self-determination and we voted this time again
for a resolution that provides for the Saharawi people right to
self-determination".
He regretted the sufferings of the Saharawi refugees calling for an
urgent reaction to push the dossier forward. "To remain cross-handed
does not serve the countries of the Maghreb Arab", he estimated.
