Algiers, 06/06/2007 (SPS) The Algerian President, Abdelaziz
Bouteflika, affirmed on Tuesday in Algiers that the problem of
Western Sahara is a factor of blockage to the process of building
the Maghreb, which conditions the future of the entire region, the
Algerian Press Service, APS, reported.
"The problem of Western Sahara represents a factor of blockage to
the process of edification of the Maghreb, which condition the
future of our region. But it is becoming increasingly obvious that
this unity can not be realised on the detriment of the Saharawi
people and its legitimate and inalienable rights", Mr. Bouteflika
stressed during an official luncheon he offered on the honour of the
President of Nicaragua, Mr. Daniel Ortega.
Bouteflika noted that the positions of Algeria and Nicaragua "meet
completely in the promotion of the objectives and principles of the
UN as well as in the protection of the human rights as a whole",
adding that "this is exactly what explains our action in favour of a
real self-determination for the people of Western Sahara in strict
conformity with the international legality".
The UN Security Council resolution1754, adopted in April the 30th,
which recommend direct and unconditioned negotiations between
Morocco and POLISARIO Front "may help getting off the current
inaction", President Bouteflika estimated.
"We hope that these negotiations reach a satisfying solution that
respects the self-determination of the Saharawi people", he said.
Bouteflika hailed, on this occasion, the decision of President
Ortega to recognise and establish diplomatic relations with the
Saharawi Republic the next day of his investiture.
"That was a just and courageous decision which has certainly had a
favourable effect on the evolution of the situation in this region",
he affirmed
On his side, President Daniel Jose Ortega reiterated his support to
the Saharawi people, recalling that he signed last January the 10th
the recognition of the Saharawi Republic, "which is living a
terrible strategy" because, he said, "they are still denying its
right".
