29/03/2007 (SPS) In the eve of the presentation of the UN Secretary
General’s report on the Western Sahara to the UN Security Council,
The Mayor of Naples, Mrs. Rosa Iervolino Russo, interpellated the
UN’s highest official, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, on the dramatic situation
the Saharawi people is living for more than 30 years, exhorting him
to implement the UN’s resolutions in this question.
In a letter publicised on Wednesday, the Mayor of Naples expressed
her and her fellow-citizens "deep concern" about the situation of
the Saharawi population in the refugee camps while the other part of
the Saharawi people in the occupied territories are "victims of
unacceptable human rights violations".
Mrs. Rosa Iervolino Russo recalled the UN’s Secrtary General of all
the UN’s resolutions calling for the decolonisation of the
Non-Self-Governing territory through a referendum on
self-determination calling on him to work fr the implementation of
the international legality.
She also stressed on the necessity of rejecting the Moroccan
unilateral proposition of autonomy, which ignores the Saharawi
people’s claims and rights, exhorting the UN Secretary General to
achieve the decolonization process in the territory as soon as
possible.
Finally, Mrs. Russo called on Mr. Ki-Moon to guarantee the
protection of the Saharawi populations living in the occupied
territories from the "repression, torture, arbitrary trials they are
living every day" and "to put an end the illegal exploitation of the
natural resources of the Western Sahara". (SPS)
