SADR/GREAT BRITAIN

The Saharawi Coordinator with the MINURSO in a visit to London

London, 29/03/2007 (SPS) The Saharawi Coordinator with the UN Mission for the referendum in the Western Sahara (MINURSO), M’Hammed Khadad, started contacts, on Wednesday to London, with British officials and representatives of Oil companies that signed accords with the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic.

The visit of Mr. Khadad to the United Kingdom aims especially to inform the British officials about the steady position of the Polisario Front regarding to the settlement of the conflict in Western Sahara that languishes for more than 30 years. Mr. Khaddad also reiterated the Saharawi position regarding the "autonomy Plan" that Morocco is trying to promote without revealing its content.

The Polisario Front, it should be recalled, estimates that this "plan is no more than another Moroccan manœuvre, which unique objective is to try to deceive the international community so to avoid the organisation of a referendum on self-determination that constitutes the only option which is really conform to the universal principles of democracy and human rights that are the basis for the UN’s action".

Mr. Khadad’s visit intervenes while the UK is about to assume the presidency of the U’s Security Council in April, which coincides with the semester discussion of the situation of the Western Sahara and the prorogation of the mandate of the MINURSO. (SPS)
