Brussels,
29/03/2007 (SPS) The Algerian Minister delegated in charge for the
Maghreb’s and African Affairs, Mr. Abdelkader Messahel, underlined
before the Belgian Senate that Algeria’s position on Western Sahara
"completely conform with the international community’s" and is based
on the principles established by the international legality.
"The international community agreed on a consensus according to
which the Western Sahara is a Non-Self-Governing territory and as
such is eligible to be decolonised, what requires the
self-determination of the Saharawi people as underlined in all the
resolutions of the UN for the last 40 years", Mr. Messahel stressed
during his meeting with the president of the Belgian, Mrs. Anne
Marie Lizin, the Head of the Belgian diplomacy, Karol de Gucht, and
before the Belgian Senate’s Commission for Foreign Affairs.
From this standing point, the Algerian official expressed the
Algerian rejection of the "autonomy plan" proposed by Morocco
because, he said, it puts "a beforehand ‘Morocanity’ of the Western
Sahara and ignores the Saharawi people’s inalienable right to
self-determination, a non negotiable principle". (SPS)
