Chahid El Hafed,
27/03/2007 (SPS) The South African parliamentarian and person in
charge of the external relations of the South African Democratic
Alliance (opposition), Mr. Douglas Gibson affirmed "the commitment
of his party for the defence of the Saharawi people’s right to
self-determination and independence", during a meeting he had with
the Ambassador of the Saharawi Republic in South Africa, Mr. Ubbi
Bouchraya, at the seat of the South African National Parliament in
Cape Town.
The meeting tackled the last developments in the UN’s efforts for a
peaceful solution with a view to decolonise the Western Sahara.
The Saharawi diplomat informed his interlocutor about the obstacles
erected by Morocco in the face of the implementation of the UN’s
Settlement Plan and the Baker Plan, unanimously adopted by the UN’s
Security Council in its resolution 1495.
Regarding the Moroccan so-called "autonomy plan", Mr. Bouchraya
underlined that colonialism in its last attempts always proposes
such manœuvre that has always failed through history, affirming that
a "just and transparent referendum is the only democratic way, of
which the POLISARIO Front will respect the results".
On its part, Mr. Gibson also reaffirmed "the readiness of the
Democratic Alliance to undertake all possible means within the South
African Parliament to attract the attention of the South African
public opinion on the flagrant human rights violations committed by
Morocco against the Saharawi civilians in the occupied territories
of the Western Sahara.
The Democratic Alliance is the main South African party of
opposition with 47 seats in Parliament.
