Chahid El Hafed, 26/03/2007 (SPS) A delegation of the Chilean
Association of friendship with the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic
(SADR), chaired by Senator, Alejandro Navarro, accompanied by
Parliamentarian Ominami, handed over a letter to the Councillor,
Alejandro Foxley, calling on the Government of Chile to recognise
the Saharawi Republic.
The letter, of which SPS received a copy, exhorts "the State of
Chile to culminate its compromise with a view to establish relations
with the Saharawi Republic, the defence of the Saharawi people’s
human rights and the contribution to the establishment of peace
through the holding of a referendum on self-determination for the
Saharawi people".
In May 2006, leaders of the Coalition and opposition political
parties in Chile, in addition to representatives of the Chilean
civil society, artists and intellectuals addressed a letter to the
President of the Republic of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, urging him to
recognise the Saharawi Republic and to establish diplomatic
relations between the two countries, the text recalled.
By adopting such a decision Chile will reaffirm its traditional
position and commitment to its support to the inalienable right to
independence of the colonial countries and peoples, the letter
estimated.
The flagrant and systematic human rights violations committed by the
Moroccan State against the Saharawi civilians in the occupied
territories of the Western Sahara since 1975 constitutes "a big
concern of the international human rights organisations, including
the Chilean organisations".
The Saharawi Republic is the only Spanish-speaking Arab country,
member of the African Union and "our country must reaffirm its
relations of friendship with all the countries", the text concluded.
