Chahid El Hafed, 25/03/2007 (SPS) The President of the Republic,
Mohamed Abdelaziz, received the UN Secretary General’s Special
Representative for the Western Sahara, Julian Harston, on Saturday a
the presidency in the end of a 24 hours visit to the Saharawi
Republic the UN’s official undertook within the framework of a turn
in the region after his designation to the post last February.
The
President of the Republic reaffirmed the willingness of the
POLISARIO Front to cooperate with the new Special Representative for
the organisation of a referendum on self-determination conforming to
the Settlement Plan of 1991, the Houston Accords 1997 and to the
Baker Plan, during a dinner he offered on the honour of the UN’s
emissary.
He
also expressed the "preoccupation of the Saharawi party in front of
the daily violations of the human rights of the Saharawis in the
occupied territories by the Moroccan colonial authorities, calling
on the UN to implement the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’
recommendations", included in its last report on the region.
On another hand, Mr. Abdelaziz denounced the exploitation of the
Saharawi natural resources, what constitutes a violation of the
international law, according to the legal opinion of the UN
Secretary General’s Councillor for legal affairs, Hans Correl.
Concerning the Moroccan rejection of its engagements, signed by
Rabat with the Saharawi party under the auspices of the UN with a
view to organise a referendum on self-determination for the Saharawi
people, Mr. Abdelaziz expressed "the categorical rejection" of the
POLISIO Front of the "autonomy proposition" presented by Morocco,
estimating that the question of the Western Saharawis a
decolonisation issue that should be resolved through a just and
transparent referendum on self-determination.
Before the dinner the UN’s official met with the Head of the State
accompanied by the Prime Minister, Mr. Abdel Kader Taleb Oumar, the
Saharawi Coordinator with the MINURSO, Mr. M’Hamed Khadad and the
Minister of Defence, Mr. Mohamed Lamine Bouhali.
The
UN’s delegation was composed of Mr. Harston’s Political Councillor,
Mrs. Claire Bamber, and the Person in charge of the MINURSO Bureau
in Tindouf, Carmen Johns. (SPS)
