Paris 24/03/2007 (SPS) The France-Saharawi Committee for the
Respect of the Liberties in the Western Sahara (CORELSO- in French
abbreviation), based in Paris, asked the German authorities to
"intervene" vis-à-vis the European Union, currently chaired by
Germany, in favour of the Saharawi people’s right to
self-determination, reported the Algerian Press Agency, APS.
In a letter addressed to the German Ambassador in Paris, the CORELSO
stressed that his "country chairs the European Union for the first
semester of 2007. And thus we would like to set the alarm regarding
the situation in the Western Sahara, which is illegally occupied by
Morocco since November 1975".
"Since the cease-fire brokered in 1991 under the auspices of the
United Nations, Morocco redoubles the dilatory plots to impede the
implementation of the UN Settlement Plan that provides for a
referendum on self-determination conforming to the resolution 1495
of July 2003 (Baker Plan), while this plan was accepted by the
Polisario Front", the NGO stressed.
"Now, Morocco wants to step even further trying to legitimise its
policy of annexation and occupation of the Western Sahara with its
autonomy plan, which Rabat wants to unilaterally impose to the
detriment of the international legality based on the peoples’ rights
to govern themselves", the NGO further added.
The CORSELO estimated that the EU must make use of its privileged
relations with Morocco to convince it respect the international
legality and honour its engagements in the decolonisation of the
last colony in Africa. (SPS)
