SADR/MOROCCO/MEDIAS

The Arabic press must be "objective" in the treatment of the question of the Western Sahara (Polisario Front)

London, 23/03/2007, (SPS) Polisario Front called, Friday, on some Arabic newspapers to show some "objectivity" in their treatment of the conflict of the Western Sahara and not to be influenced by the Moroccan approach.

In their covering of the so/called Moroccan autonomy and the turn undertaken by the Moroccan emissaries in many influent countries, the Arabic Medias "give the impression that we are in front of an extraordinary event and a courageous step aiming to find a solution to the conflict", affirmed Polisario Front representative to the UK and Ireland, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, in an article published by the London based Arabic newspaper, El-Qods El-Arabi.

"This exaggerated interest" given by the Arabic Medias to the "Moroccan initiative" is due, according to the Saharawi diplomat, to two elements. The first been, "the complete ignorance of the history of the conflict of the Western Sahara, what is inexcusable especially if we take into consideration the increasing interest given by many international Medias to many aspects of the conflict that languishes for three decades so far".

The second element is linked to the "conscious or unconscious" reproduction of the news propagated b the Moroccan Medias without verification of their authenticity in complete violation of the "professional principles of deontology and journalism", he stressed.

The Saharawi representative recalled of the historical development of the conflict and the sources of the Moroccan "initiative", as well as the long peace process supervised by the UN, which was supposed to provide for the self/determination referendum under the aegis of the UN. (SPS)
