London, 24/03/2007 (SPS) Great Britain reiterated its
position of support to the UN’s efforts for a "just and definitive"
settlement of the conflict of the Western Sahara "that provides for
the self-determination of the people of the Western Sahara".
During the session of questions in the House of Commons, Dr. Kim
Howells, Minister of State in charge for the Middle East
International Security and the Reforms of the UN, stressed that
"Great Britain considers the status of the Western Sahara as
undetermined until the efforts of the UN help finding a solution".
Dr. Howells, who was answering a question by the Conservative
Deputy, Daniel Kawczynski, on the UK position regarding the Western
Sahara, stressed according to the website of the House of Commons
that his country "fully approves the efforts of he UN Secretary
General and his personal Envoy to the Western Sahara, Peter Van
Walsum, to help the parties find a political, just and lasting
solution, which is mutually acceptable and that provides for the
self-determination of the people of the Western Sahara".
The renewal of the British position intervenes at a moment when
Morocco is undertaking a real campaign of propaganda in favour of
its "autonomy plan" to the Western Sahara, which is rejected by
Polisario Front, and few days before the start of the period of
presidency of Great Britain to the Security Council. (SPS)
