OCCUPIED TERRITORIES/REPRESSION

Abusive transfer of a Saharawi political detainee from the Carcel Negra to Tiznit

El Aaiun (occupied territories), 17/03/2007 (SPS) The Moroccan colonial authorities abusively transferred the Saharawi political prisoner, Laaroussi Choubeida, on Friday from the Carcel Negra (black jail) of the occupied city of El Aaiun to the local prison of Tiznit (Morocco), reported the Saharawi Association of the Victims of the Flagrant Human Rights Violations Committed by the Moroccan State (ASVDH- in its French abbreviation).

The family of the political detainee was informed on Friday that its son was transferred to the local prison of Tiznit, Morocco. Members of the family affirmed they had visited Laaroussi on Thursday and "that he did not have information about the transfer", the same source underlined.

The family expressed "concern about the fate of its son, who was supposed to have a chirurgical intervention because of some problems he had due to the hunger strike he undertook with his comrades the others political prisoner since January the 30, 2007", it was added.

This "forced deportation, was qualified by the ASVDH as "a violation to the Saharawi political prisoner’s right", "is added to a set of acts of vendetta against Choubeida Laaroussi, which varied from the ill-treatment in the Carcel Negra, passing by the iniquitous trial and now the abusive transfer to the local prison of Tiznit".

Mr. Choubeida, who had announced his rejection of the Moroccan nationality, was condemned to 18 months imprisonment. This sentence was confirmed last Tuesday by the court of appeal of the occupied city of El Aaiun, the Saharawi NGO recalled.

The Saharawi political prisoner was arrested in the occupied city of Dakhla last March 2006 and transferred to the notorious Carcel Negra of El Aaiun for having peacefully demonstrated to advocate he Saharawi people’s right to self-determination and independence, it should be recalled. (SPS)
