Madrid, 14/03/2007 (SPS) The Algerian President, Abdelaziz
Bouteflika, underlined in an interview to the Spanish newspaper "El
Pais", on Tuesday, that "no unilateral solution can be viable" for
the settlement of the conflict in the Western Sahara, reported the
Algerian Press Service, APS.
"Only the recognition of the Saharawi people’s right to
self-determination is able to resolve the problem", he affirmed,
pleading for "a peaceful solution through the organisation of a
self-determination referendum for the Saharawi people under the
aegis of the United Nations".
President Bouteflika affirmed that the question of the Western
Sahara "can never be a casus belli between Algeria and Morocco",
estimating that Spain "has a lot to gain via assuming its moral and
historical responsibility" in this question.
