Madrid, 14/03/2007 (SPS) The Spanish Congress of deputies
(Low Chamber of the Spanish Parliament) approved on Tuesday evening
two motions supporting the "Saharawi people’s right to
self-determination", through a "referendum", and a solution to the
conflict of the Western Sahara that "respect the international
legality".
The first draft motion, presented by the Parliamentary group of the
United Left-Initiative for Green Catalonia, was voted by 304
deputies of the 305 present to the plenary.
The text, which received unanimous support of all the Spanish
parliamentarian groups, calls on the Spanish government to "defend
an urgent, just and definitive solution to the conflict of the
Western Sahara within the framework of the UN Security Council, that
is conform to the international legality and that enable the
resolution of the Humanitarian tragedy the Saharawi people is living
for the last 30 years".
The Congress asked the government to "promote all the political
initiatives that contribute to reach a consensual accord between the
parties, which respect the international legality an the Saharawi
people’s legitimate right to self-determination conforming to the UN
Charter and to the Security Council’s resolutions".
It also calls on the government to "abstain from supporting of
promoting any measure that weakens the possibilities to play a fair
role in the search of a solution to the conflict".
The low Chamber of the Spanish Parliament called on the Moroccan
authorities to "release the Saharawi prisoners detained for the
exercise of their rights and fundamental freedoms and stop all human
rights violations in this conflict".
On another hand, the motion invites the Spanish government to adopt
all necessary measures to "urgently prevent a food crisis" in the
Saharawi refugee camps and "increase the humanitarian aid and
technical cooperation with these camps".
The second draft motion, presented by the mix parliamentarian group
and unanimously adopted by the deputies, calls on the Spanish
government to "respect, facilitate and promote the organisation of a
referendum for the exercise of the self-determination in the Western
Sahara conforming to the UN’s resolutions".
