Coalicion Canarias criticises the "ambiguity" of the Spanish government’s position on Western Sahara

Madrid, 13/03/2007 (SPS) The President of the Spanish political party, Coalicion canarias (CC), Paulino Rivero, qualified the position of the Spanish Socialist government, on Monday, as "ambiguous", and affirmed that any solution to the conflict must obligatorily be within the framework of the "respect of the international legality".

"The position of the Socialist government on the conflict of the Western Sahara continues to be ambiguous", Mr. Rivero estimated in a pres release the political party presented to the two chambers of the Spanish Parliament.

"Coalicion canarias, conforming to the UN’s position on the Western Sahara, defends the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination", he affirmed adding that any proposition to the resolution of the conflict must receive the “preliminary accord'' of the Saharawi people’s representative, Polisario Front.

"Before supporting the Moroccan strategy, the president of the government, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, must in the first place take into consideration the opinion of the (Spanish) political forces and in the other hand the opinion of the second party to the conflict, Polisario Front", Mr. Rivero underlined.

To the President of the CC, "what must prevail in the conflict of the Western Sahara are the stability of the zone and the respect of the international legality, without ignoring the conditions of life of the Saharawi population and the full exercise of their human rights". (SPS)
