OCCUPIED TERRITORIES/REPRESSION

Arrest of four Saharawi citizens in Dakhla for having claimed the independence of their country

Dakhla (occupied territories), 12/03/2007 (SPS) Four young Saharawis at least were arrested on Sunday evening in Dakhla (Villa Cisneros), for having claimed for "the independence of the Western Sahara and the immediate withdrawal of the Moroccan forces of occupation from this territory, which was invaded by Morocco in 1975", indicated a source from the Saharawi Ministry of Occupied Territories and Communities.

The Moroccan forces of repression arrested Sidi Hamdi Mayif, Chiaa Boujemaa, Mamadou Chein and Ahmed Baba Ali Salem, blaming them for "chanting slogans asking for the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination and for having distributed leaflets denouncing the Moroccan human rights violations in the Western Sahara", during a "cultural festival" organised in this city by the Moroccan colonial authorities.

The victims were "transported to the police station under torture" in Dakhla, the same source underlined adding that the victims are in a very bad state because of the ill-treatment they were subjected to.

Three of them: Chiaa Boujemaa, Ahmed Baba Ali Salem and Mamadou Chein were transferred while in coma to the hospital of the city, according to the first news, the same source added.

On another hand, the occupied cities of El Aaiun and Smara were the theatre of many demonstrations this weekend on the occasion of the anniversary of the First Martyr of the Saharawi struggle for freedom, the late El Bachir Lehlaoui, who died in the field of honour in March 8, 1974.

These peaceful demonstrations were brutally oppressed by the Moroccan forces of occupation, which sealed the streets to impede additional demonstrations in favour of the independence of the Western Sahara. (SPS)
