Madrid, 08/03/2007 (SPS) The Spanish Popular Party’s
Secretary in charge for international relations, Mr. Jorge Moragas,
declared on Wednesday that the Spanish "left, which has always
supported the Saharawi cause, must feel ashamed" about the position
of the Spanish socialist government on the conflict of the Western
Sahara, the Algerian Press Service, APS, reported.
In a statement to the press, Mr. Moragas estimated that the
socialist government, through the position it adopted during the
Spanish-Moroccan high level meeting in Rabat, has "broken with the
principle of active neutrality", which has always characterised "the
traditional position" of Spain, affirming that this country "has no
more an appropriate position" on the conflict.
"Zapatero
publicly supported one of the parties to the conflict", he declared,
recalling that he has "put aside" the Baker plan since his accession
to power, though that plan was unanimously approved by the members
of the Security Council.
To the PP representative, the Spanish government’s policy on the
conflict of the Western Sahara "concluded a set of diplomatic
errors", and "eliminated the role of mediator Spain was playing" in
the conflict, and further shows that the principles of the
international legality are used by the socialist government
"according to the circumstances".
On its part, the Catalonia Republican Party (ERC, a party
represented in the Parliament) affirmed that the Saharawi people
have got the right to "freely decide over their future through a
self-determination referendum". (SPS)
