Madrid, 08/03/2007 (SPS) Polisario Front deplored the new a
"drift" of the Spanish government regarding the Western Sahara
question, estimating that Madrid has rushed in "supporting" the
"unilateral" proposition of autonomy, presented by Morocco, reported
the Spanish Press Agency, Europa Press.
The statements of the President of the Spanish government, José Luis
Rodríguez Zapatero, at the end of the 8 High level meeting concluded
on Tuesday by Morocco and Spain, as well as the content of the joint
declaration approved by the two countries, reflect an "unexpected
expression of hostility", considered Polisario Front Representative
to the United Nations, Ahmed Bujari, in a statement to Europa Press.
Bujari underlined that the Spanish executive has "all the necessary
elements to judge" so as at least "to opt for wisdom" instead of
"rushing" in "supporting a Moroccan unilateral proposition", which
is in addition "rejected" by the Polisario Front since it aims to
"impede the existence of an independent Saharawi State in the
region".
In this respect, the Saharawi diplomat considered that an autonomy
project for the Western Sahara "has got no legal basis" since
Western Sahara is not a Moroccan province.
Zapatero, it should be recalled, declared on Tuesday during a joint
press conference with the Moroccan Prime Minister, Driss Jettou that
the proposition of Morocco to grant an ample autonomy to the Western
Sahara can serve as a "basis" for the launching of a direct dialogue
between the parties within the framework of the United Nations.
In their joint declaration Spanish indicated that this proposition
can generate "a new dynamic of dialogue to surmount the current
impasse and progress in the objective of reaching "a settlement to
the conflict that can guarantee the principle of the
self-determination".
The Saharawi representative underlined that Polisario Front is
"absolutely" not disposed to negotiate with Morocco on the basis of
this plan. He warned that the message given by Zapatero reinforce
the "expansionist ambitions of Morocco to the detriment of the
international legality".
He further regretted that Spain "excluded" itself from the
possibility of playing a "balance" role in the conflict, estimating
that Madrid has "unilaterally broken the political and diplomatic
relations" with the Polisario Front.
Mr. Bujari underlined, however, that the voyage that the kings of
Spain will start this Tuesday in Algeirs may be an opportunity for
the government of Rodríguez Zapatero, to "reconsider the tragic step
he took in Rabat".
On another hand, the Saharawi diplomat indicated that the Secretary
general of the Polisario Front, Mohamed Abdelaziz, will meet today
with the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, in New York. (SPS)
