Tifariti (liberated territories), 27/02/2007 (SPS) The Saharawi
Republic destroyed a second stock of antipersonnel landmines on
Tuesday in the liberated territory of Tifariti, conforming to the
Ottawa Convention and to the Geneva Call.
The ceremony of destruction took place with the presence of the
President of the Republic, Mohamed Abdelaziz, the Algerian Minister
of Moudjahidine, Mr. Mohamed Cherif Abbas, the Algerian Minister
delegated for Foreign Affairs in charge of Africa and the Maghreb,
Abdelkader Messahel and representatives of many countries from
Africa, Asia, Europe and Latino America.
This operation, the second of its kind after the one executed last
year (2006), reflects "the will of the Saharawi Republic to stick by
the peaceful way for the realisation of a just and lasting peace in
the region".
On their part, the representatives of the different international
organisations hailed the initiative undertaken by the Saharawi
State, which has fulfilled the second phase of destruction of its
stock of antipersonnel landmines, conforming to the signed accords
and in implementation of the international legality.
On the other hand, they denounced the attitude of the Moroccan
Government that "refuses to implement its resolutions" and "persists
in its policy of systematic violation of the human rights and
fundamental freedoms through millions mines disseminated in the
liberated territories of the Western Sahara and which continues to
cause thousands victims". (SPS)
