El Aaiun (occupied territories), 20/02/2007 (SPS) The
Moroccan colonial authorities arrested the Swedish journalist, Mr.
Lars Bjork, on Monday in the occupied city of El Aaiun (Western
Sahara capital), indicated a press release published on Tuesday by
the Saharawi Journalists’ and Writers’ Union (UPES).
"The Moroccan authorities of occupation arrested the Swedish
journalist, Lars Bjork, on Monday 19 February 2007, within the
framework of the Medias and military siege imposed on the occupied
territories of the Western Sahara since its invasion in 1975", UPES
denounced.
The Swedish journalist, "who was intimidated and accused of being an
agitator, is now under threat of expulsion or worst of judicial
pursuit for a striking accusation of terrorism", UPES added, quoting
information from a Saharawi associative source from the occupied
territories.
The Saharawi organisation expressed its complete solidarity with the
new victim of the Moroccan repression calling international
journalists’ unions and human rights organisations to help in
standing against this irresponsible Moroccan policy and to condemn
the Medias and military siege imposed on the territory for three
decades so far.
It recalled, on another hand, that this case "is far from been the
first, because many Spanish, French and Norwegian journalists have
already experienced harassment, intimidation and expulsion from the
occupied territories of the Western Sahara".
