OCCUPIED TERRITORIES/REPRESSION

Saharawi students in El Aaiun protest against the Moroccan "autonomy project" in the Western Sahara

El Aaiun (occupied territories), 13/02/2007 (SPS) The students’ movement in El Aaiun organised a demonstration in El Aaiun to protest against the "autonomy project", indicated a source from the Ministry of Occupied Territories and Communities.

The demonstrators lifted the flags of the Saharawi Republic and chanted slogans calling for the "immediate withdrawal" of the Moroccan occupation from the Western Sahara rejecting the "autonomy project" the Moroccan kingdom is trying to present as a solution to the conflict of the Western Sahara it illegally occupies for more than 30 years.

The students in El Aaiun have organised in the beginning of this week a sit-in of solidarity with the Saharawi political prisoners in hunger strike since two weeks so far.

On another hand the Moroccan forces of repression arrested, last Sunday, the ex-political prisoner, Bazeid Salek because of his opinion in favour of the independence of the Western Sahara under Moroccan occupation.

In the occupied city of Smara, according to the same source, the Moroccan colonial authorities recently deployed more than 40 police officers disguised in civil clothes to watch the Saharawi families during their reception of the members of their families coming from the Saharawi refugee camps within the framework of the UN supervised families visits exchange programme.
