OCCUPIED TERRITORIES/REPRESSION

A Saharawi NGO denounces the repression of the citizens in Mhamid El Ghezlan

El Aaiun (occupied territories), 06/02/2007 (SPS) The Committee for the Defence of the Right to Self-determination of the Western Sahara (CODAPSO) denounced "the savage repression" perpetrated by the Moroccan Government last January the 23rd against the Saharawi citizens in the village of "Mhamid El Ghezlan" (south of Morocco), who are undertaking a sit-in of protest since August 2006.

The CODAPSO energetically condemned "the aggression of the Moroccan forces of repression against demonstrators who were peacefully claiming the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence", expressing its solidarity with the Saharawi citizens in the Moroccan rural village with a Saharawi majority, the NGO stressed in a press release on Tuesday.

It further called on the UN "to exercise pressures on Morocco to put an end to the flagrant human rights violations in the Western Sahara and enlarge the prerogatives of the UN’s Mission for a Referendum in the Western Sahara (MINURSO) to include the protection of the human rights in the occupied Saharawi territories".

CODAPSO finally demanded the "immediate and unconditional release" of the Saharawi political prisoners and human rights activists, who are still maintained in detention in the deferent Moroccan prisons. (SPS)
