Polisario Front ready to collaborate with the new Special Representative of the UN Secretary General

Bir Lehlu (liberated territories), 04/12/2006 (SPS) Polisario Front declared to be ready to collaborate with the UN Secretary General’s new Special representative for the Western Sahara, Julian Harston, recently proposed by Mr. Ban Ki-mon to the UN Security Council on the head of the UN Mission for a referendum in the Western Sahara, MINURSO, indicates a press release by the Ministry of Information.

"POLISARIO Front will provide the new Special Representative with all necessary aid and cooperation for the success of the mission of the United Nations with the ultimate goal to organise a free and transparent self-determination referendum for the Saharawi people", the press release stressed.

On another hand, Polisario Front condemned "the delays and manoeuvres of Morocco, whose last avatar is the current propaganda about the "autonomy" in complete ignorance to the opinion and universally consecrated sovereign decision of the Saharawi people".

Polisario also called on the UN Secretary General and Security Council to "take into consideration this reality" and to deploy all efforts so as to "hasten the decolonisation of the Western Sahara through the implementation of the peace plan adopted by the international community".

The UN Secretary General has informed the Security Council last Thursday about his intention to nominate Julian Harston, from the United Kingdom, as his Special Representative for the Western Sahara and head of the MINURSO.

Mr. Harston started working in the UN since 1995 after a career in the British ministry for Foreign Affairs. He also worked in many posts within the UN especially in the Department of the UN peacekeeping operations in New York. (SPS)
