An ONG blames the Spanish Government for its "unclear" position on the Western Sahara conflict

Madrid, 01/02/2007 (SPS) The Association of solidarity with the Saharawi people of the Canary Islands (ACSPS) blamed the Spanish Government on Wednesday for its unclear position on the conflict of the Western Sahara and called on the Moroccan authorities to collaborate with the UN so as a self-determination referendum be organised.

This position was expressed by the Vice-President of the association, Rosario Bolanios, on the occasion of the delivery of a letter of protest addressed to the Government of this country to protest against the repression exercise by Rabat in the occupied territories of the Western Sahara.

Mrs. Bolanios, quoted by the Spanish press agency EFE, denounced the "Medias blockage" to which are submitted the occupied territories where "the repression against the Saharawi population, the practice of torture, detentions and absurd trials" are still exercised.

She also denounced "the connivance of some European governments", which have relations with the Moroccan regime without demanding the lifting of the siege imposed on the Western Sahara by Morocco.

"I can not understand how we can stay so complaisant in the face of the seriousness of the situation lived in about one hundred km far from the Canary Islands", she wondered underlining that this "tolerance" reassures Morocco in its policy.

In its letter to the Moroccan Government, the Canary Islands’ association of solidarity with the Saharawi people demanded the end "of the brutal repression" exercised against the Saharawi population, the release of the Saharawi political prisoners and the free access of international press and observers to the occupied territories of the Western Sahara.

It further ed the UN Security Council and to the international community in addition to the Moroccan State to respect the implementation of the international legality in Western Sahara through a self-determination referendum, "the only way to reach a just solution" to the conflict, the association underlined.
