OCCUPIED TERRITORIES/POLITICAL PRISONERS/HUNGER STRIKE

Saharawi political prisoners in the Carcel Negra announce an unlimited hunger strike starting from Today

El Aaiun (occupied territories), 30/01/2007 (SPS) Saharawi political prisoners incarcerated in the Carcel Negra (Black Jail in El Aaiun) start an unlimited hunger strike Today to protest against the "inhumane treatment and hard conditions of detention" they are subjected to, indicated a press release issued by the prisoners.

They also denounce "the aggression led by the guardians of the Carcel Negra in the early morning of 19 January 2007 against the Saharawi political prisoners who were handcuffed and evacuated from their cells and their stuff confiscated", the same text stressed.

The Saharawi political prisoners also asked for the end of the "flagrant human rights violations perpetrated against them by the Moroccan government and to protect them conforming to the human rights universal conventions and accords and enabling them to enjoy their rights, to the visit of their families, medical care and to be gathered apart from the imprisoned criminals".

They also asked for the dispatch of a commission so as to start a "just and transparent investigation" on this savage aggression that provoked serious wounds in the different parts of the prisoners corpses after the intervention of the Moroccan specialised torturers, the PARA groups, the text added.

The Saharawi political prisoners finally launched an appeal to the international community and the human rights organisations to "exercise pressures on Morocco for the immediate and unconditional release of the Saharawi political prisoners and to put an end to the sufferings of the Saharawi people so as they can enjoy their inalienable right to self-determination and independence", the text concluded.

On another hand, the Saharawi citizens in Taghjijit and Goulimine respectively situated in the south of Morocco started a hunger strike on Monday in response to the appeal launched on Monday by the Saharawi political prisoners and expressed their solidarity with the political prisoners as well as the attachment to the legitimate rights of the people of the Western Sahara.
