Addis-Abeba,
29/01/2007 (SPS) The President of the Republic, Mohamed Abdelaziz,
took part to the African Union’s 8th ordinary summit, which opened
its works on Monday in the Ethiopian capital, Addis-Ababa, to
discuss questions linked to sciences, environment and conflicts in
Africa.
During the opening session of the summit, the African leaders
proceeded to the election of the new President of the Pan-African
organisation, President of Ghana, John Kufuor, instead of the
Congo’s President, Denis Sassou Nguesso, whose mandate as President
of the AU expires.
Sudan was to take the presidency of the AU but because of the
Darfour conflict the African leaders elected the Congo’s Head of
State, Denis Sassou Nguessou, during the African summit in Khartoum
in January 2006.
The modalities of the integration of the new partnership for the
development of Africa (NEPAD) in the structures of the AU as well as
modalities related to the election of the members of the Commission,
the Executive body of the AU will also be tackled in this two days
summit.
The African leaders should also adopt the AU’s budget for 2007 and
study the report that should be presented by the AU’s Council of
Peace and Security (CPS) on conflicts in Africa.
On another hand, the African Heads of States participated in the
afternoon to the launching of the international year of the African
Football 2007, which will mark the 50th anniversary of the African
Football Confederation with the presence of the President of the
FIFA, Joseph Blatter.
