28/01/2007 (SPS) The Algerian Minister delegated in charge of the
Maghreb and African Affairs, Abdelkader Messahel, saluted "the
consensus" of the African Unions Executive Council on the
decolonisation of the Western Sahara, the Algerian Press Agency, APS,
reported.
Mr. Messahel indicated, in margin of the meeting of the AU Executive
Council, held on Thursday and Friday in Addis Ababa, that there is a
consensus within the Council and that the African Union "reiterated
its support to the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination,
the support to the resolution 1495 (of the UN Security Council) and
declared that there will be no solution outside the
self-determination.
This position, he adds, is a constant position of the AU which was
stressed without the opposition of any member country of the Pan
African organisation, Mr. Messahel said.
The resolution 1495 was unanimously adopted on July 2003 by the UN’s
Security Council approving thus the "Peace Plan for the
Self-determination of the People of the Western Sahara", elaborated
by the ex-American Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, James
Baker, as an optimal solution to the conflict of the Western Sahara.
