SADR/AFRICAN UNION/ALGERIA

Algeria salutes the AU "consensus" on the decolonisation of the Western Sahara

Addis-abeba, 28/01/2007 (SPS) The Algerian Minister delegated in charge of the Maghreb and African Affairs, Abdelkader Messahel, saluted "the consensus" of the African Unions Executive Council on the decolonisation of the Western Sahara, the Algerian Press Agency, APS, reported.

Mr. Messahel indicated, in margin of the meeting of the AU Executive Council, held on Thursday and Friday in Addis Ababa, that there is a consensus within the Council and that the African Union "reiterated its support to the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination, the support to the resolution 1495 (of the UN Security Council) and declared that there will be no solution outside the self-determination.

This position, he adds, is a constant position of the AU which was stressed without the opposition of any member country of the Pan African organisation, Mr. Messahel said.

The resolution 1495 was unanimously adopted on July 2003 by the UN’s Security Council approving thus the "Peace Plan for the Self-determination of the People of the Western Sahara", elaborated by the ex-American Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, James Baker, as an optimal solution to the conflict of the Western Sahara.
