Chahid El Hafed, 25/01/2007 (SPS) A joint delegation of the
UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the World Food
Programme (WFP) started on Thursday a mission of evaluation of the
famine that is striking the Saharawi refugee camps because of the
reduction of the international humanitarian aid supervised by the
specialised UN body and financed by donating countries.
This mission of 12 days consists in "evaluating the terrible food
situation and the conditions of nutrition in the Saharawi refugee
camps after the recent interruption of the food supplies", the UNHCR
declared in a press release published in its official website on
January the 23.
The mission is sent to the camps after the repeated appeals by the
Saharawi Red Crescent, which underlined «the state of urgency» a
week ago asserting that the Saharawi population, estimated to more
than 165.000 refugees, received this January only 1 Kg of rice, 1 Kg
spaghetti and 2 Tuna cans for person.
"The WFP detains, since three months, a Spanish donation evaluated
to 1,5 millions euros, and other donations, especially from the
European Humanitarian aid General Direction (ECHO), estimated to 1
million euros, and a 240 thousand euros from Finland, all of which
dedicated to the Saharawi refugees to avoid a famine in the camps,
indicated the President of the Saharawi Red Crescent, M. Yahia
Bouhoubeini, in the beginning of January. (SPS)
