Quito, 16/01/2007 (SPS) Representatives of Ecuadorian human
rights organisations had had a work meeting, on Sunday evening, with
the President of the Republic, Mohamed Abdelaziz, who received them
at his residency within the framework of the receptions he accorded
to activists and political actors, with the presence of the Saharawi
Ambassador in Ecuador, Hash Ahmed, indicated an authorised source
from the Presidency.
The Representatives of the Permanent Assembly for Human Rights (APDH),
the Centre of documentations on Human Rights "Segundo Montes Mozo S.
J.", the Inter-American Platform for Human Rights "Democracia y
Desarrollo", and the Youth Red for Human Rights, all together
confirmed to the President of the Republic their determination to
promote the organisation of a big body of solidarity with the
Saharawi cause.
On another hand, they reiterated their engagement to "organise
different activities and undertake initiatives that can unmask the
inhumane face of the Moroccan colonial regime in the Western Sahara,
which is hindering the implementation of the inalienable right of
the Saharawi people to self-determination", the same source added.
The four organisations participating to the meeting, which was
covered by Latino American TV channels such as Altercom and Telesur,
also informed the Head of the Saharawi State that they were studying
the possibility of organising a Latino-American mission of
observation to investigate on the human rights situation and about
the conditions of detention of Saharawi human rights activists in
the occupied territories of the Western Sahara.
In this respect, the representative of the four organisations
affirmed they started contacting Ecuadorian parliamentarians aiming
to create a parliamentarian block of the friends of the Saharawi
cause.
Mr. Abdelaziz arrived to Quito last Saturday 13 in response to an
official invitation from the Ecuadorian Government to attend the
official ceremony of transmission of power in the Latino American
country. The President was then just coming from Nicaragua where he
attended the investiture of its new President, Daniel Ortega.
During his sojourn in the Ecuadorian capital President Abdelaziz
received in his residency many political personalities as well as
representatives of the human rights organisations, a source from the
Saharawi presidential delegation indicated to SPS.
He also gave exclusive interviews to TV channels, including to Canal
TeleSur, which cover the entire Latino America and broadcast from
Caracas, and the National TV of Panama.(SPS)
