Algiers, 02/01/2007 (SPS) The UN, through its different
bodies, reaffirmed in 2006 its support to the to right to
self-determination of the Saharawi people, who continue their
resistance to compel "the Moroccan coloniser to conform to the
international legality".
During the year 2006, the UN’s Security Council adopted two
resolutions, in April and in October, which recalled the "right to
self-determination" of the people of the Western Sahara.
The UN General Assembly also voted a new resolution supporting the
Saharawi people’s right to decide over their future last December
the 14th.
The UN Security Council adopted 52 resolution since the UN brokered
a cease fire and a peace plan between Morocco and the Polisario
Front in September 1990, but the referendum that was planed to take
place the next year then is still not organised after 16 years.
"I can not understand why they are afraid of the Saharawis votes
while this can only reinforce peace and stability in the region" of
the Maghreb, declared Mr. Mhamed Khadad, Saharawi Coordinator with
the UN’s Mission for the organisation of a referendum in the Western
Sahara, MINURSO.
He said however that "as long as the UN promises to resolve the
problem on the basis of the respect of the self-determination for
the Saharawi people, we will continue to favour the peaceful
option", Polisario Front’s senior official affirmed.
