Madrid,
21/12/2006 (SPS) The Spanish ex-Minister for Foreign Affairs,
Senator Josep Piqué, of the Popular Party (PP) blamed the Socialist
Head of the Government, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, of not
defending the international legality in the Western Sahara as the
Spanish precedent governments did.
"All Spanish Government defended the international legality that was
defined by the United Nations, including the Baker Plan", Senator
Josep Piqué said.
"This was done by all government except yours", Mr. Piqué declared
during a plenary session of the Spanish Senate, with the presence of
the actual Head of the Spanish diplomacy.
Since the beginning, he added, the Socialist government "prematurely
excluded the Baker plan, without explaining to us why, and clearly
allied the Moroccan positions on the Western Sahara".
"This was noticed by the entire world, including the Saharawis who
feels they were abandoned by this government", he said.
Mr. Piqué estimated, on another hand, that the relations of
"balance" adopted by Spain, with the countries of the Maghreb, has
changed significantly, calling on the Spanish Government to "return
to the Spanish traditional policy in the Maghreb".
