18/12/2006 (SPS) The High Commissioner of the European Union’s
Foreign Policy (EU), Mr. Javier Solana underlined in an interview
published Sunday by the Algerian Arabic speaking newspaper, "El-Khabar",
that the EU supports "Saharawi people’s self-determination".
"The EU often supports a political solution to the conflict, within
the framework of the UN and the respect of the Saharawi people’s
right to self-determination", he underlined, estimating that the
conflict of the Western Sahara remains an "obstacle" for the
relations in the region.
The Un General Assembly (GA) adopted a new resolution, on Thursday
with 70 vote in favour and none against, a clearly reaffirming that
the conflict of the Western Sahara is a decolonisation issue
dependent on the implementation of the resolution 1514 and which
solution must intervene through the exercise by the Saharawi people
of their inalienable right to self-determination, it should be
recalled.
The resolution of the UN General Assembly’s 61th session, affirmed
the validity of the Settlement plan of 1990 as well as the Peace
Plan for the self-determination of the people of the Western Sahara
as the optimal political solution for the conflict in the Western
Sahara. (SPS)
