Algiers,
15/12/ 2006 (SPS) After the adoption of a new resolution by the UN
General Assembly, the spokesperson of the Algerian Foreign Affairs
Ministry gave the following statement:
"The UN’s General Assembly adopted an explicit and firm resolution
on the Western Sahara.
In this resolution, the General Assembly strongly reaffirmed the
right of the people of the Western Sahara to self-determination and
recalled that it is a question of decolonisation, confirming, thus,
the United Nations responsibility in the implementation of its
solution.
By the same resolution, the UN reaffirms the validity of the
Settlement Plan for which the UN Mission for the referendum in the
Western Sahara (MINURSO) was deployed.
In this same logic, this text reiterates that the Baker Plan for the
self-determination for the people of the Western Sahara is the
optimal political solution that can put a definitive end to this
conflict.
This position marked the reaffirmation of the UN’s doctrine
regarding decolonisation is so important that it obtains the clear
support of a politically significant majority of the member States
from all the regions of the world.
With its substance and conditions of its adoption, this resolution
considers as unacceptable any dilatory attempt or perversion of the
peace process in the Western Sahara, and reaffirms again that the
free expression of the sovereign will of the people of the Western
Sahara is an obligatory path for the achievement of the
decolonisation of this territory.
Algeria hopes that the Kingdom of Morocco and Polisario Front find
in this new resolution an encouragement for both of them to
willingly cooperate for the firm implementation of the UN’s constant
doctrine regarding the settlement of the conflict opposing them and
for the establishment of peace and stability in the region". (SPS)
