OCCUPIED TERRITORIES/HUMAN RIGHTS/REPRESSION

Demonstration in Smara

Commemoration of the International day of human rights: injured and arrested in the occupied territories

Smara (occupied territories), 11/12/2006 (SPS) The Moroccan police injured many Saharawi citizens and arrested dozens others in the main occupied cities of the Western Sahara during peaceful demonstrations celebrating the international day of Human Rights (10 December).

In the occupied city of Smara, the colonial forces of occupation violently dispersed two demonstrations that were organised in parallel in the Saharawi spiritual capital of the Western Sahara and arrested many demonstrators including the son of a Saharawi victim of forced disappearance, El Makhloufi Hamoudi.

The same scenario, which took place in the occupied city of El Aaiun, the political capital of the Western Sahara, the Moroccan forces of security also arrested dozens persons and wounded dozens others including the imminent Saharawi human rights activist, and ex-victim of forced disappearance, Mrs. Jimi El Ghalia.

The demonstrators raised placards and chanted slogans asking for the release of the Saharawi political prisoners, the organisation of a self-determination referendum and asked for the revealing of information on the fate of more than 500 Saharawi disappeared and more than 151 prisoners of war.

The tension is in its extreme limits in both occupied cities where the Moroccan forces seal the main streets and arrest persons in their houses, eye witnesses said. (SPS)
