Shahid Alhafed, Sep 8, 2009 (SPS) - Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union held in Tripoli, August 31, unanimously adopted an action plan during its special session dedicated to examination of conflict resolution in Africa including Western Sahara.

The summit agreed to "support the ongoing efforts of UN attempts to overcome the current impasse, and the relevant resolutions of the UN, calling for direct negotiations between the parties without preconditions and in good faith, to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable, political solution, allowing the determination of the people of Western Sahara in the context of arrangements consistent with the principles and objectives of the UN Charter."
To this end, the special session called for "intensification of efforts to hold a referendum to allow the people of the Territory to choose between the option of independence and the integration into the kingdom of Morocco ". (SPS)
