UN allocates 1.5 million dollars to Sahrawi refugees

Algiers, July 25, 2009 (SPS) - The central Fund of urgent intervention of United Nations (CERF) has allocated 1.5 million U.S. dollars to the Sahrawi refugees, it was learned Saturday in Algiers by the Office of Resident Coordinator for operational activities of UN system for development.

The Emergency Relief Coordinator of the UN, John Holmes, has allocated 1.5 million USD for strengthening programs of emergency assistance to nearly 90,000 Sahrawi refugees among the most helpless, "said the same source in a press release.

"An assessment conducted earlier this year showed that malnutrition rates among beneficiaries is around 18%", it said.

While the programs providing the refugees with food assistance through the World Food Program (WFP) of United Nations are comparatively well financed, supplementary programs covering other areas suffer from deficit of financing which compromise the ease of the refugees, as it is raised from the same source.

“The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) launched a call for about 6.03 million U.S. dollars to assist the Sahrawi refugees, but only 44% have been covered in these days,” the United Nations regrets.

CERF funds will be distributed by the Resident Coordinator for operational activities of UN system for development, in priority to relief programs for refugees, "

These funds allocated to the program of assistance to the Sahrawi refugees are part of the approximately $ 55 million granted by the Emergency Relief Coordinator of the UN through a process of support programs for emergency underfunded throughout the world. (SPS)
