Geneva( Switzerland) 06/03/2009 (SPS) The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) stated Friday that human rights and fundamental freedoms continue to be violated in Western Sahara, during the presentation of the Working Group report on Arbitrary Detention ,at the United Nations house in Geneva.
"Arbitrary detention, torture, intrusion into private homes and violence go hand in hand with the restrictions imposed on the Saharawi human rights defenders and freedom of expression and demonstration", deplored the Sahrawi human rights defender, Daha Rahmouni, who intervened on behalf of WSF.
The Saharawi Defender explained that the Sahrawi Association of Victims of Human Rights Violations (ASVDH) which he is a member in is prohibited, despite repeated requests for registration submitted to the Moroccan authorities.
A delegation of Sahrawi human rights defenders and the Secretary General of the Union of Saharawi Jurists, Abba Al Haissan, participated in the work of the 10th session of Human Rights Council, taking part from 02 to 27 March 2009 in Geneva, Switzerland.
In addition to the various scheduled meetings on the sidelines of the session, the Saharawi defenders will discuss the situation in Western Sahara at a conference under the title " UN forces and the protection of civilians in Western Sahara" to be held Thursday in the conference room of the International Centre of Varembé in Geneva.
This conference should help to better understanding of the situation of human rights in Western Sahara, discusses ways to extend the mandate of MINURSO to protect the Saharawi civilians in the occupied territories and establish a timetable for the organization of a just and fair referendum to enable the Saharawi people to decide their own future.
