SADR / AFRICAN UNION

Jean Ping:'' The dossier remains at “deadlock”

Shahid Al Hafed, 03/02/2009 (SPS) The Western Sahara issue remains at an “impasse," the President of the African Union Commission, Jean Ping, said Monday in Addis Ababa, at the opening of 12 AU ordinary summit of Heads of States and Governments.

Ping said in his opening statement "in Western Sahara, the issue remains deadlocked, despite the recent appointment of new representative of UN Secretary-General," without progress on the subject.

AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, Mr. Ramtane Lamamra, had already indicated that the Western Sahara conflict has not evolved "significantly" in 2008, noting however that the new Personal Envoy of UN Secretary General, Ambassador Christopher Ross, began his term with "very serious and a methodology that seems to be open and promising."

"We hope that 2009 will be a year of positive developments for the peace process in Western Sahara", he said. (SPS)
