Polisario Front Re-Elects Secr. Gen. Abdelaziz

El Aiun, Dec 21 (Prensa Latina) Mohamed Abdelaziz was reelected today the General Secretary of the Polisario Front at the final session of the 13th Congress, which opened on December 15 in Tifariti.
 
  The Election Commission confirmed the transparence and credibility of the voting in which Abdelaziz, in office since 1976, won 96 percent of votes from the over 1,000 delegates who also approved the final report and established the guidelines for the next four years on self-determination and total independence of Western Sahara.
 
The Polisario Front has fought since 1975 against Moroccoâ�Ös colonial tutelage on the Arab Sahrawi Democratic Republic, and bilateral negotiations to end this status, with UN mediation, have so far failed due to Rabatâ�Ös intransigence.
 
Morocco insists on turning Western Sahara into an autonomy within the Kingdom as the only solution to the conflict, leading dialogue to its current standstill; while the Polisario Front and the Sahrawi Republic demands total independence, although its leaders favor peaceful means and a referendum among the Sahrawis.
